Starbucks: A Little History On The Coffee Giant

In 1971 the first Starbucks was founded by Jerry Baldwin, Gordon Bowker, and Zev Siegl as a single store in Seattle, Washington that sold fresh-roasted coffee beans. It wasn’t until ten years later that Howard Schultz, current CEO and Chairman, first discovered Starbucks and bought the business from the three entrepreneurs.

Schultz traveled to Italy and was inspired by the Italian coffee bars, bringing the idea back to the US to start what is now the world’s top ready-to-drink coffee retailer. In the ‘90s Starbucks spread across the country, then the world, and soon became a publicly traded company after offering stock to its part-time employees. Celebrating over 40 years of business today, Starbucks has 21,536 stores around the world and continues to grow in popularity.

The company made 16.5 billion US dollars in 2014, which is more than triple the annual revenue it made in the last ten years. It was named the second most valuable fast food brand worldwide next to McDonalds and has nearly 32 million Americans visiting each month.

Starbucks stores sell hot and cold beverages, whole-bean coffee, instant coffee, espresso, café latte, teas, pastries, desserts, and snacks. Mugs and reusable to go cups are also sold to encourage reducing waste from disposable cups. You can also find a selection of Starbucks ready-made Frappuccino and iced coffee drinks sold at grocery stores and gas stations.

The most popular drink purchased from Starbucks in the US is a regular coffee, however some fans are claiming they have uncovered a secret menu. Starbucks claims that they have over 87,000 different drink combinations available, and that number far surpasses the limited selection mounted within store walls. The other combinations are allegedly on the secret menu.
