Mark Zuckerberg: The Founder of Facebook

In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg, a software developer at Harvard University, along with a couple other classmates created The Facebook, a social network designed for Harvard students to network, upload photos, and connect with other students via the internet. After realizing how popular the site had grown, the decision was made to make it available to all college students with an .edu email address. The network spread like wildfire and had attracted over 1 million users by 2005. After the name changed to just Facebook, it was clear that it would become the most dominating social network in virtual space.

Mark Zuckerberg Fortune Founder of Facebook

Shortly after the founding of Facebook, Zuckerberg decided to drop out of his sophomore year at Harvard and focus on the company fulltime. Now over 10 years old, Facebook has more than 1.44 billion active users a month and continues to remain one of the most popular social networks out there.

Today Zuckerberg remains CEO and Chairman of Facebook and was recently ranked #7 on the Forbes 400 list with a net worth of $40.9 billion dollars. His fortune has earned him the title of the youngest billionaire in the world at age 31 and the 16th richest person in the world. With over 50 acquisitions and mergers, including Instagram and WhatsApp, it’s no wonder why Facebook is still dominating.

Currently residing in Palo Alto, California, Zuckerberg and his wife are expecting their first child after several miscarriages, but Zuckerberg has no plans for slowing down. Facebook just bought Ocular VR, a company that developed headgear to turn your Samsung smartphone into a “virtual reality system.” Zuckerberg confirmed speculations that the purchase means Facebook is currently working on augmented reality, sure to bring even more fortune to the thriving company. Facebook is not going anywhere anytime soon.
