Big Ben: Is it the clock or the tower?

Think of a popular clock tower in London. Now guess its name. Did you think something like ‘Big Ben’? Sorry but there are no towers in London named Big Ben.

Although a lot of people associate the name ‘Big Ben’ to the clock, or the tower, or the clock and tower as one, Big Ben is actually the nickname of the Great Bell of the clock, while the tower itself is officially called as Elizabeth Tower (called as such in celebration for the 60th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II on 6 February 1952).

Completed in 1858, the tower is now more than 150 years old. The tower is one of the most recognizable land marks in London, and because of that, it has been used a lot in films to establish a “London scene”.
