The premise of Gotham is centered on character James Gordon (Ben McKenzie), a new recruit to the Gotham City Police Department, with detective Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue). Together the two solve high-profile cases, like that of the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne, parents of Bruce Wayne (David Mzouz). While working to solve the murder, Gordon gets mixed up with Gotham mafia and in a strange series events becomes friends with Bruce who will later become Batman.

When developing Gotham, Fox bypassed the traditional “pilot phase” and placed a “straight-to-series” order for the show in May 2014. Instead of ordering the standard 13 or 22 show episodes, Gotham’s first series contained 16 episodes. It received the “Critics’ Choice Television Award” in 2014 and a 90% rating from Rotten Tomatoes. It’s generally positive response encouraged a second season, which is airing now.

The CW television network aired a similar series inspired by DC Comics’ Flash character that piloted around the same time as Gotham. The show was named The Flash and won the People’s Choice Award for “Favorite New TV Drama” in 2014. Needless to say, DC Comics is finding great success in the TV Series market.
